Home Buyer Education

Through our homebuyer education program, we help those of you who are looking to buy a home – maybe for the first time – learn the basics of home buying and home ownership. From deciding if you are ready to purchase, to rebuilding credit, creating a budget plan and learning how to understand the numerous documents, we will guide you in this 8-hour class. All classes are located at El Centro’s main office at 650 Minnesota Ave, KCK and last 8 hours. The class is given in both Spanish and English with the Spanish classes held on the 1st Saturday and English classes being held on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Registration begins at 8:30 with class starting at 9:00 AM; everyone is eligible to attend this class. Financial Literacy and Asset Building:
Money management and economic concerns are addressed through our monthly group financial literacy classes providing you budgeting knowledge, money handling skills, and the basics of surviving in the financial world. It is never too early to start planning! This Program is an 8-hour course (2 hours per week, 4 weeks total) on the following topics.

Budgeting – Identifying sources of income, distinguishing between fixed and variable expenses, distinguishing between needs and wants, and developing a personal budget, online resources.
Savings – Savings basics, different types of interest, best way to save, how to be debt-free.
Investing – Investing terminology, strategies, and resources, retirement accounts, etc.
Taxes – Why do we pay taxes, how to read pay stubs, tax terms and tax forms, special tax credits and benefits, tax saving strategies

Decade of Difference-Individual Development Accounts:
Thanks to funding provided by the United Way of Greater Kansas City, El Centro is now offering individual development accounts as an educational opportunity for individuals with financial needs. To qualify applicants must be between the ages of 16-26 and meet program outlined requirements. This program offers:
Federal funding that will match 2:1 (participants may deposit up to $2000)
Federal funds that will help pay for education expenses
Local funding that will match 1:1 ( participants may deposit up to $500)
Local funds that will help pay for other non-educational expenses
